It seems like we’re all in a race. A race to the polls, a race for equality, a race to find a balance, a race for a cure. Our kids are certainly feeling it, too.

I came across a Chinese Proverb that says, “Be not afraid of growing slowly. Be afraid of standing still.”

Sometimes you have to downshift. Our kids follow our lead. I’ve heard kids say, “I’m so stressed out!” Huh? You’ve been on this planet for 8 years and you’ve already stressed out? And the reality is that they probably are. We can change that.

Here’s 12 ways to lighten up (that bear repeating)-

  1. Raise their heart rate
  2. Breathe
  3. Meditate
  4. Listen to music, Sing along
  5. Go outside and play (My favorite for a kid)
  6. Hug
  7. Play with a pet
  8. Puzzles (a distraction that focuses)
  9. Talk
  10. Take a bath
  11. Sleep or nap
  12. Stretch

Oh, and by the way, I put my money where my mouth is. Ask my students what we did this week.
